I'm in the process of putting together a dedicated listening room. I'm using an existing room but I am intending to extend the length and this in turn will allow me to do the following : replace one of the existing long walls (22' 3") in length with Acoustic Science's Iso wall system as well as the rear wall. The remaining front and the other long wall are and ceiling (8'1') are lath and plaster. I'll also be upgrading the outlets and installing a sub-panel with wiring per Robert Harley's decryption in his article detailing the building of his listening room in his article in AS #293. My question is about best practice in "tuning the room". I have to say I find myself struggling with the fear that I may not end up with the improvement that I want in making this move as I find myself confronted with uncertainty after uncertainty. I've been working with Acoustic Sciences and while they have been helpful in suggesting pathways and treatments it seems all too in the realm of "it depends" and while I do get that it's a complicated problem what I am looking for is proper procedure after having finished the remodel, and placing the speakers , components, carpet etc to begin to tune the room? Detailed Measurement of some sort seems like the first step ? But where to from there? I am assuming that dealing with bass end will be first? But just as a for instance should physical treatments as opposed to digital filters be used and so on and so forth...If it helps my system is: AR Reference 160M MkII Mono Amplifiers, Ref 6 and Ref 3, Linn Klimax DSM, Luxman D-10X, Linn Klimax Turntable w/ Radikal power supply, Bowers & Wilkins D4 801, Nordost Q Base Ref, Valhalla 2 cables, with an Odin Power Cord, and an old Nakamichi Cassette Deck for fun. All on HRS SXR racks.
